Lab Results at a Glance
The Lab Results module opens with the selected patient’s recent laboratory tests listed in an easy-to-scan summary.- The patient heading row shows the selected patient’s name, age, gender, location, and MRN. Use this information to verify that this is the right patient.
- The module header row shows the number of lab results currently displayed, such as “Lab Results (31).” When you apply a filter, this line is updated. For example, “Lab Results (6)” indicates that six lab results match the filter and are displayed on the list.
- Each Lab Result is summarized on its own line and shows the Panel name, Date and Time of the lab, highest Normalcy Status (Critical, Abnormal, Normal), and lowest Completion Status (such as Pending or Final). Each line may also show the Source of the lab result information (the hospital or practice from which it was derived). The right side of each row displays the components contained within the panel and the resulted values, as well as panel diagrams for BMP, CBC, and Chem7 (if they have been mapped at your institution).
- Components are color-coded. Critical values are displayed in red text, and abnormal values are displayed in yellow text.
- A blue asterisk (*) indicates that there is a comment about that component.
- From the Summary list, you can select a lab result and step through a series of screens that show progressively more detailed information. See Viewing Lab Results Details.
Filtering Lab Results
Use a filter to limit the number of Lab Results that are displayed on the Summary list. There are two ways to filter the results:- Most organizations have a standard set of filters based on the type of lab result, such as “Hematology” or “Chemistry.” In this case, a “Hematology” filter would include just the Hematology lab results. See Using Standard Filters.
- You can filter the Summary list of lab results by searching for any phrase. Only the lab results that have that phrase in either the panel name or one of the component names are shown. See Using a Search Term as a Filter. The module header row keeps track of the number of lab results currently displayed for the patient. For example, when no filter is applied, you might see “Lab Results (9)” in the header, and all of the available labs displayed in the summary list. If a filter is applied, the Filter button is displayed at the top of the summary list, with a label describing the filter criteria. For example, you might see “Lab Results (2)” in the module header, and the Filter button labeled, “Filtered by: Hematology” to indicate that only the Hematology labs are shown. If you apply more than one filter, the module header counts the combined number, and the Filter button label lists each of the filters that are applied.
Using Standard Filters
To apply a standard filter for Lab Results, follow these steps:-
Tap Filter in the upper right corner of the Lab Results Summary screen.
The Filters screen is displayed and shows the following:
- The top of the screen displays a list of Filter Terms. The currently selected filter(s) are indicated by a checkmark.
- Below the Filter Terms, you may see additional filters by Source (the hospital or practice from which the lab result information was derived), if your organization has implemented the Health Information Exchange feature and it is enabled in your user profile. The currently selected filter(s) are indicated by a checkmark.
- Select or deselect one or more filters from the Filter Terms or Sources. If some but not all of the filters are selected, a Select All button is available at the bottom of the screen; tap Select All to select all of the available filters. If all of the filters are selected, a Deselect All button is available; tap Deselect All to deselect of the filters.
- Tap Done. The Lab Results Summary screen displays with the lab results that match the filter criteria. The filter(s) remain selected until you choose something different.
To go back to showing all of the lab results for the patient
- From the Lab Results Summary list, tap Filter in the top-right corner of the screen.
- At the bottom of the Filters screen, tap Select All, and then tap Done. All of the available lab results are displayed in the Lab Results Summary list.
Using a Search Term as a Filter
You can filter the Summary list of lab results by searching for any term or phrase. Only the lab results that have that phrase in either the panel name or one of the component names are shown.- Tap into the Search field located at the top of the Lab Results Summary.
-
Enter any phrase into the Search field, and then select the Search key on the virtual keyboard.
The virtual keyboard is hidden, and only the panels that match your search criteria are shown. For example:
- “Thy” would find Thyroid panels, because the panel name contains the letters “Thy.”
- “T4” would find Thyroid panels, because one of the component names is “T4.”
- “WB” would find CBC panels, because one of the component names (WBC) contains the letters “WB.” To go back to showing all of the lab results for the patient:
- Clear the Search field by tapping the X on the right side of the field. All of the patient’s lab results are shown again.
Viewing Lab Results Details
The Commure Pro system organizes lab results into panels and components. A panel can consist of a single component, or a group of components that are performed together. For example, a Prothrombin Time (PT) panel might consist of that single component, while a Complete Blood Count (CBC) panel might consist of a variety of components such as a hematocrit, a hemoglobin, a white blood count, and a platelet count. You can review exactly the level of information that you want for a patient.- The Lab Results module opens with a Summary list that displays all the current lab panels for the selected patient. Scrolling through the list, you can see at a glance if there are Abnormal (yellow) or Critical (red) results, or other labs or panels you want to review.
- Selecting an item displays progressively more detailed information. For example, you can select a CBC panel on the Summary to view either the panel Detail view or the panel Table view (see Displaying Panel Detail View or Panel Table View). The panel Detail view displays a list of the components in the panel, along with the Value and Normal Range for each component. The panel Table view displays a list of the components in the panel along with the value for each, and also shows the values from all other occurrences of the same panel.
- From either the panel Detail view or the panel Table view, you can then select a component (like Hct) to see the details of the component (Lab Report view), or the component graphed over time (Graph view).
- The Lab Report view displays the details of the individual component, such as the Collected date/time, the result Value, the normal Range, the completion Status, and any Comments. Each line may also show the Source of the lab result information (the hospital or practice from which it was derived). To look at this view, select the Lab Report tab at the top of the screen. See Viewing Component Details.
- The Graph view offers a different look at the data, where multiple data points on a single graph show trends over time.
To look at a graph, select the Graph tab at the top of the screen. See Graphing Lab Component Trends.- From the both Lab Report view and the Graph view you can:
- Go back to the panel Detail view or panel Table view. Tap Back .
- Go back to the Lab Results Summary. Tap Back again.
Displaying Panel Detail View or Panel Table View
When you select a lab result from the Lab Results Summary, either the panel Detail view or the panel Table view is displayed. Detail view is the default view, but you can easily switch back and forth between views. Once you start switching views, the view that you last used remains selected until you choose something else. To switch between panel Detail view and panel Table view:- From the Lab Results Summary, tap any lab result row to display panel Detail view or the panel Table view (the view you last used is displayed).
- To switch the view, tap the Detail or Table button, located at the top center, just below the patient heading.

- Detail view displays information about the currently selected panel only; this is just one specific instance of the lab test. For example, if you select the April 12th instance of the Chem7 panel, you see information about only the April 12th lab test. At the top of Detail view, a summary of the panel is displayed (this is the same information that is shown on the Lab Results summary). Below that, the Detail view lists all of the components in the panel, along with the value and normal range for each component. If you select any component’s row, the component Graph or Lab Report screen is displayed (depending on which screen you viewed last) for that component.
- Table view displays information about all occurrences of the currently selected panel. For example, if you initially select the April 12th occurrence of the Chem7 panel, you see information about the April 12th lab test, as well as information about all other Chem7 panels that the patient had. At the top of Table view, a summary of the panel that you initially selected is displayed (in our example, this would be the April 12th occurrence). This is the same information that is shown on the Lab Results summary. Below that, the Table view displays all of the panel instances in a table format, with all of the components listed vertically on the left, and the dates and times of each occurrence along the top from left to right. The table cells contain the numeric results for each component. The ability to view the other instances of the same panel, along with the specific instance in which you were originally interested, allows you to identify any trends in the clinical data. While viewing the panel table, you can scroll left and right, as well as up and down. If you select any component’s row, the component Graph or Lab Report screen is displayed (depending on which screen you viewed last) for that component. While looking at either panel Detail or panel Table view, you can also perform these additional actions:
- Order the same panel again for this patient. If the CPOE Orders module is implemented at your organization, and also enabled in your user profile, you can place a new order for this same panel, or just an individual component from a panel, by tapping the Order Again button at the top right of the screen.
- Move to the panel Detail or Table view for the next panel in the patient’s Summary list. Swipe right to left.
- Move to the panel Detail or Table view for the previous panel in the patient’s Summary list. Swipe left to right.
If you are in Table view, you must tap above the table when you swipe, in order to move to the next/previous panel. If you swipe directly on the table, you will instead scroll the table columns to the left or right
- View a Graph or Lab Report for a specific component. Tap on any component in either the panel Detail or panel Table view to see the Graph or Lab Report view for that component.
- Go back to the Lab Results Summary. Tap Back.
Graphing Lab Component Trends
Graphing is available at the lab component level. A graph is most useful to see how a component is trending over time, compared to looking at the most recent value. Multiple values are graphed so that you can review the patient’s progress. Most Lab Results are numeric. However, if a Lab Result contains any non-numeric characters (for example, “straw” or “+2” or “<.5”), then it is not included on the graph, and message to that effect is displayed.
- From the Lab Results Summary screen, select any lab result panel (such as a CBC). The panel Detail view or the panel Table view is displayed, depending on the last view that you used.
- Select a row for a specific component (such as K for potassium). The component Graph or Lab Report view is displayed, depending on the last view that you used.
- If the Graph view is not already displayed, tap Graph at the top of the screen switch to that view.

- Select a data point on the graph. When you select a data point, it turns into a purple circle, and the date and value for that point are displayed just above the graph. To select a data point, tap on it.
- Zoom in or out on the graph. When there are a large number of data points on the same area of the graph, zoom in to blow up the details for a particular period of time. Zoom back out again to see the big picture. To zoom in, use the “stretch” gesture. To zoom back out again, use the “pinch” gesture.
- Order the same component again for this patient. If the CPOE Orders module is implemented at your organization, and also enabled in your user profile, you can place a new order for this same component by tapping the Order Again button at the top right of the screen.
- View the Lab Report for the component. Tap Lab Report at the top of the screen switch to that view.

- Go back to the panel view. Tap Back to go back to either the panel Detail view or the panel Table view, depending on the last view that you used. Tap Back again to go back to the Lab Results Summary.
