- Draft or completed transactions that you have entered on your mobile device, or on the web application.
- Draft or completed transactions that other users have entered, either on their mobile devices, or on the web application. Several settings in your user profile control the amount of charge data that you can view (in terms of timeframe), as well as the type of charges you can view (just those you have posted yourself or all charges within your department).
Viewing Charge Data: Patient List versus Charges Module
There are two main views of charge data for your patients: via the Patient List module, or via the Charges module.- When working from the Patient List module, an entire list of patients list is shown on the screen, and charge status information is displayed in the right-hand column. This column displays every patient’s charge status, using a series of icons that indicate whether charges have been posted for each of the last several days. You can review the charge status of the patient visits on your list, and then go to the Charges module to enter or edit charges. See Viewing Charge Data from the Patient List for more information.

- When working from the Charges module, only one patient’s charge information is displayed on the screen at any given time. If draft charges or completed charges have been posted for the patient, they are displayed. You can enter a new charge, update a draft charge, edit a charge, copy a charge, delete a charge, or simply view a charge. Once done, the Charges Summary screen is updated with the patient’s latest information. See Viewing Charge Data From the Charges Module for more information. The main advantage to using the Patient List module is that it gives you a comprehensive overview of the entire patient list, indicating which patients have had charges entered, and which have not. You can easily see how much work is still left to be done. The advantage to using the Charges module is that it enables you to see more detailed information about each patient’s charges. You can see exactly what charges have been posted, for a longer timespan, along with service dates and procedure codes. Both are useful in different scenarios, and you can easily switch between the two views at any time.
Viewing Charge Data from the Patient List
When the Charge Status column is enabled, the right-hand column of the Patient List screen shows the status of charge transactions for the patients on the patient list, using a series of icons, as in this example:. The column contains between one and seven icons, representing the last one to seven days in chronological order. The most recent date, today, is on the far right. The number of days displayed depends on a setting in your user profile; the default setting is three days.
| Icon | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Empty circle | Neither you, nor any provider whose charges you are authorized to view, has yet entered a charge for this date. |
| Half filled circle | There is more than one visit for this date, and at least one of them has had charges entered. |
| Filled circle | You, or another provider, have already entered a charge transaction for this date. If there is more than one visit for this date, all of them have had charges entered. |
| Dotted circle | You, or another provider, have entered a draft charge. |
| Dash | No charge is expected because the patient has no visits for this date. |
Viewing Charge Data From the Charges Module
The Charges module displays charge data for only one patient at a time. From this module you can view, edit, copy, delete, or add to the list of charge transactions for the selected patient. A charge transaction is the combination of charges, modifiers, and diagnoses that represent the services provided to the patient during a visit. The Charges module opens with a Summary of visit days for the currently selected patient. Each visit lists the days included in that visit (for example, one day for an outpatient appointment, or multiple days for an inpatient visit), along with the corresponding charge transactions for each day of the visit. If the patient has additional visits that are not included on the currently selected patient list, you can opt to show those visits on the Charges Summary, so that you can review whether charges have been entered yet for those visits, or to review the patient’s prior charge history on older visits. Tap Settings > Charges, and then turn ON the Include All Visits option to show the additional visits and their charge status, or turn it OFF to hide them. The Charges Summary screen is organized as follows:- The patient heading row shows the selected patient’s name, age, gender, MRN, and location. Use this information to verify that this is the right patient.
-
A visit summary row is displayed for each visit the patient has recently had. It contains the following information:
- The admission date/time for visits that have admit and discharge dates (such as inpatient visits), or an appointment date/time for visits with a scheduled date (such as outpatient visits).
- The discharge date/time if the visit is discharged.
- The location of the visit (which is struck through if the visit is discharged).
- The attending and scheduled providers associated with the visit (if both are present on the visit).
- An abbreviation that identifies the type of visit (such as IP for Inpatient or OP for outpatient).
-
Below the visit summary row, additional rows for each day of the visit are displayed. For visits that consist of more than one day (such as inpatient visits), there are multiple rows. For visits that last only one day (such as outpatient appointments), there is only one row. For each visit day, the status of the charges for that day is displayed. For example, the status might be that no charges have yet been entered, or that one or more charges have been entered. The possible charge statuses that you might see are listed below.
- When no charges have been posted for a date, the row says “Add New Charge.” For example: 10/19 Add New Charge
-
When you or another provider have posted a completed charge transaction for a date, the billing provider and charge information are shown as follows:
10/19 JONES, CHARLES
Charges 99231: Subs Hosp Level 1
Diagnoses K27.1: Acute peptic ulcer with perforation -
When you or another provider have posted a draft charge transaction for a date, the billing provider and charge information are shown, along with a icon, to indicate “Draft.” For example:
10/19 JONES, CHARLES
Charges 99231: Subs Hosp Level 1
Diagnoses K27.1: Acute peptic ulcer with perforation -
An (A) after any CPT code indicates that it was automatically added after the transaction was saved, as a result of the optional Automated Code Entry feature (see the Commure Pro Web help system). You can see the auto-added codes only if this feature is enabled in your user profile. For example:
10/19 JONES, CHARLES
Charges 99214: Office visit - established lev 4
S9441T: (A) Tech Charges: Asthma education by nurse
Diagnoses J45.901: Asthma with exacerbation -
A (P) after any CPT II code indicates that it was automatically added after the transaction was saved, as a result of the user completing a PQRS Clinical Metrics form (see the Answering PQRS/MIPS Clinical Metrics Questions). You can see the auto-added codes only if this feature is enabled in your user profile. For example:
10/19 JONES, CHARLES
Charges 25600: Treat fracture radius/ulna

- Edit: Open this charge transaction for viewing or editing (if the transaction is still editable).

Viewing the Details of a Charge Transaction
A charge transaction contains charges and associated modifiers, diagnoses, and charge header information. Each transaction contains one or more charges, and zero, one, or more diagnoses that apply to some or all of those charges. The charge header information, such as service date and billing provider, applies to the entire transaction. Additionally, a transaction may also contain comments. You can easily view the complete information contained within any charge transaction. You may also be able to edit the transaction if it meets all of the criteria described in Restrictions to Editing Charge Data. To view the details of a transaction, follow these steps:-
From the Charges Summary, identify the visit day row that has the transaction that you want to view. Select the row to display the pop-up a menu, and then select the Edit option.
The Charge Transaction screen opens:
- If the transaction is editable, the Charge Transaction screen opens in edit mode. The screen has a Submit button as well as controls for adding, removing, or modifying the charges, diagnoses, and detail fields. See Editing Charge Transactions for further information on editing transactions.
- If the transaction is not editable, you can only view it. There is no Submit button, and there are no controls for modifying the charge, diagnosis, or detail fields.
- To view the billing header information associated with the transaction, as well as any comments that may have been entered, scroll down to the details, located below the charges and diagnoses.
-
To close the transaction:
- For an editable transaction, tap Cancel to exit without saving any changes.
- For a non-editable transaction, tap Back to exit.
