# Custom Formatting

> Set per-template rules to control how your AI-generated notes are structured, phrased, and presented on your Android device.

<Note>
  This page is adapted from iOS documentation. Navigation paths and button labels may differ on Android. Hardware validation is pending.
</Note>

**Custom Formatting** allows you to personalize how notes are generated. By setting specific formatting instructions, you ensure that every note consistently reflects your clinical style, preferences, and workflow needs.

Custom Formatting rules are applied on a **per-user, per-template** basis. Each provider configures their own preferences, which do not affect other providers using the same template.

## What It Does

Custom formatting applies rules to the AI on a per-template basis. For example, you can instruct the system to:

* Bold all section headers
* Use bullet points in the Plan section
* Include gender-based salutations (e.g., "Mr." or "Mrs.")
* Number the patient's next steps
* Add specific formatting for medications or vitals

## How to Customize

### Overall Template Rules

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open AI Studio">
    Navigate to **Settings** > **AI Studio** > **Custom Formatting**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select a template">
    Choose any note template from the list (e.g., Progress Note, H\&P, Consult Note).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set overall rules">
    The top of the template screen shows **Overall Rules** — pre-built rule chips such as *Professional tone*, *Proper punctuation*, *Replace abbreviations*, and *Include...in section*. Tap **See more examples** to browse additional options, or type your own formatting instructions in the free-text box (up to 4,000 characters).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Tap **Save Rules**. The AI will follow these instructions every time it generates a note for this template.
  </Step>
</Steps>

### Section-Level Formatting

Below the overall rules, each template section (e.g., **Subjective**, **Objective**) can be customized individually. For each section you can configure:

**Format:**

* **Auto** (default) — AI determines the best format
* **Paragraph** — continuous prose
* **Bulleted** — bullet-point list
* **Numbered** — numbered list

**Length:**

* **Auto** (default) — AI determines appropriate detail level
* **Detailed** — comprehensive, thorough documentation
* **Standard** — balanced level of detail
* **Concise** — brief, essential information only

You can also deactivate a section entirely if you do not need it in the generated note.

### Learned Format

Each section includes a **Learned Format** area that allows the AI to learn from your previous notes and adapt to your preferred writing style and section structure. You can add up to 5 examples, and the AI uses the most recent examples to shape how it generates content for that section.

To add an example, scroll to the **Learned format** area within a section and tap **+ Add an example**. You can manage existing examples by tapping **Manage**.

## Formatting Examples

**Including or excluding content:**

* "Create a numbered problem list based on the Subjective and Objective sections."
* "Always document the general exam."
* "Avoid abbreviations for diagnoses."
* "End each note with 'Follow-up as needed.'"

**Writing style:**

* "When documenting pain levels, write them as a number out of 10 using numerals."
* "Never write a note in the first person."
* "Always abbreviate physical therapy as 'PT'."

Use the **Preview** button to see how your formatting rules will affect note generation before saving.

## Macros

Macros let you define pre-built content — either dynamic or static — that is automatically injected into specific sections of your note. Each section of a template includes an **+ Add a macro** button.

For full details on creating and using macros, see the *[Macros](/android/ambient_ai_scribe/macros)* page.

<Note>
  Formatting rules only apply to future notes. To update an existing note with additional context, use *[Resume Scribe](/android/ambient_ai_scribe/scribe-actions#resume-scribe)*.
